OPTA President-Elect/President

Position:

President-Elect/President

Term of Office:

Elected for one-year term as President-Elect at the Spring Meeting in even-numbered years. Assumes position of President for a two-year term in the following odd-numbered year at the conclusion of the Spring Meeting.

Bylaws Qualification:

PT or Life/PT member of APTA/OPTA in good standing. Candidate shall have been a member of APTA for at least 3 years, member of OPTA for at least two years immediately preceding the election.

Other Qualifications:

Have a general knowledge of the physical therapy profession in Oregon, including practice and reimbursement issues, etc. It helps to have been active in one or more OPTA committees or have served on the Board of Directors in another capacity, but this is not a prerequisite as long as the candidate is willing to spend the time developing knowledge of the “issues” and the “players”.

Be willing to play an active roll in chapter activities on an ongoing basis. While the chapter executive office handles much of the day-to-day administration, the president needs to be available for consultation and advice on committee activities and other chapter matters.

Chapter Responsibilities:
  1. Develop agendas for Board and Chapter meetings for executive office to distribute. Prior to each Chapter meeting (approx.2- 4 weeks), committee chairs need to be reminded to submit written reports summarizing committee activities, future goals an how these relate to Strategic Plan. Mentor board and committee chairs.

  2. Prepare President’s Report for each Board and Chapter meeting, reviewing current local and national issues, pertinent correspondence, etc.

  3. Preside over Board and Chapter meetings, maintaining proper decorum at each.

  4. Maintain Board of Directors Officer’s Manual in appropriate format and be responsible for turning it over to successor at the end of the elected term. Mentor 1-2 possible candidates to run for office.

  5. Monitor activities of the executive office on an ongoing basis (especially between Board meetings). Liaise with the executive staff concerning correspondence, current committee activities and calendared events. Be available to advise executive staff re: routine office problems.

  6. Receive and process mail from APTA, chapters and other sources. Clarify here exactly what EC vs President vs Board reviews. Some items may be referred to the executive office, others may be distributed to appropriate committee chairs for information/action. Some items need to be handled personally. Newsletter from other chapters should be reviewed for pertinent information.

  7. Write bi-monthly President’s Message for each issue of the LOG or delegate to appropriate guest writer. Help LOG editor develop news items for each issue.

  8. Guide annual process of setting goals and objectives, strategic plan and budget. The Board of Directors accomplishes this through the annual budgeting process.

  9. Review and evaluate annually contracts with the executive staff and government affairs representative.

  10. In conjunction with the assumption of office and in prior consultation with the Executive Committee of the Board, appoint chairmen of each of the Standing Committees per bylaws provisions.

APTA/National Responsibilities:
  1. 1. Act as a delegate to the annual APTA House of Delegates and attend all related meetings, caucuses and candidate interviews as scheduled. Liaise with the Chief Delegate to insure appropriate representation by the Oregon delegation (~4 days)

  2. Track national issues, respond to APTA mail as appropriate. Attend Council of Chapter Presidents/Leadership meetings at Combined Sections (February) and/or Annual Conference (June).

  3. Complete annual Chapter Activity Report due to APTA by_________.

Time Commitment:

Meetings 2 days CSM; 4 days HoD
Board retreat/SP 1 day
Testify as needed re: state legislature re: OPTA concerns.
